Three practical steps to building SEO
Search Engine Optimization, or rather SEO, is a strange buzz word that has a constantly changing mark.
Here is a definition of SEO from Wikipedia:
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine's "natural" or un-paid ("organic") search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine's users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search,[1] news search and industry-specific vertical search engines.
The top three things you can do to help build SEO for your website is to:
- Write fresh content
- Get Rid of Duplicate Content
- Get Backlinks to your website
Sounds easy right? If this isnt your first time reading this kind of list, then you might be thinking, “I know this already.” Even though we all know it, or recently learned it, it’s really hard to implement it. How do we know its hard? Because we don’t always have time for everything. Its easier to let things slide.
The problem with sliding is that you can only slide one direction.
Down.
So here are some practical things you can do to implement those SEO concepts this year.
Write Fresh Content:
Do a free write for your business. Schedule in your calendar some free writes. Free writing is taking 10-20 minutes and just writing. So often we get caught up in trying to write the perfect article or perfect Facebook post, tweet, etc. that we miss out on good quality content.
Begin taking photos and post it to Facebook. Tweet it. Instagram it! When your social media is connected to your website, Google notices the content. Take a photo right now of something about your office or work getting, or of the next delivery of goods at your store and post it! Add a call to action.
Get rid of duplicate content:
Duplicated content is something that most search engines are able to notice pretty easily. Whether you have 5-websites all with different names and different industries, if they have the same content then your rankings are plummeting. So how to get rid of duplicate content?
There are free tools that can sort of help, but most of them only check only one url at a time. So! Schedule time this week, between 4pm and 5pm to really look at your website and content. If you have bought any articles or have guest pieces or other 3rd-party content, take phrases from those and Google search them. Sometimes 3rd-parties will sell a content piece 20-50 times and that content could be hurting you.
Get Backlinks to your website:
Building SEO with backlinks is actually a bit rough. Its hard to get good quality links. By good quality, I mean if you can get a .EDU , Wikipedia, New York Times, Food Service of America, or your industries high end website – then your absolutely set! If you have spammer websites linking to you, you might want to get rid of those or ask them to be removed. Spam websites can and do hurt your rankings.
A common method is buying links from companies. Even though buying links can work for short term gain, the long term is a pretty damaged reputation with Google and difficulty moving your business forward in the online world.
Getting quality links is just like reviews, more often than not you have to ask for them. Ask for your product or website to be featured. If your running a community event, ask the humane society, local newspaper, and others to put your link on their website. Alternatively, offer a coupon to the local newspaper that is found on their website to direct people to your page. A 10% coupon can up your ranks and potentially your sales.
Here are a couple of tools to help see who is already linking to you:

Bing Web Master – Link Explorer
Some may ask: Bing? Really?
However, Bing’s tools are pretty comparable to Google’s  in my opinion. If you are having trouble with [Not Provided], Bing still has keyword research available too 🙂
